Among the Hidden
Author(s): Gail Falewicz Subject: Cross-Curricular
Gail Falewicz has inherited the Critical Thinking and Reading (CTR) class from Mairead Orpen. (See The Creative Learning Exchange, vol. 22, no. 1, Winter 2013.) http://static.clexchange.org/ftp/newsletter/CLEx22.1.pdf. As the CTR teacher, Gail teaches every 5th grade student at Innovation Academy Charter School (IACS), a public charter school, in Tyngsboro, MA. This is her summary of the class structure and a report of a unit she taught based on the novel "Among the Hidden" by Margaret Peterson Haddix. (1998, Simon and Schuster, Book One in the "Shadow Children" series)

A Systems View of Natural Processes: Teaching Physics the System Dynamics Way
Author(s): Hans Fuchs Subject: Science
The discussion of an approach to a systems form of physics instruction, the Continuum Physics Paradigm.

A Systems View of Growing and Developing for Young Children
Author(s): Greg Reid Subject: Science
From Catalina Foothills School District. Through the use of BOTGs, students will understand that body size and skill mastery is usually dependent upon age. In addition, they will discuss practices that will help develop their physical and learning skills.

Complex Systems Connection: Separate Cause and Effect, Short and Long Term Conflicts. Using BOTGs showing age and abilities, students can gain an understanding of how actions in the present affect results in the future and how we might need to do more of what we don't want to do now (spending time studying instead of playing, for example) in order to reap the benefits in the future.

A System Dynamics Approach to Rabbits (S-shaped growth) (D-4286)
Author(s): Terri Duhon Subject: System Dynamics
From SDEP. This paper studies S-shaped growth by examining the behavior of a rabbit population. Shows and explains a complete system dynamics model constructed for STELLA.

Complex Systems Connection: Cause within System. This paper can be used in conjunction with the Oscillations curriculum, particularly Lessons 3A, B or C on logistic growth. This progression of lessons will help students understand that undesirable behavior can be a consequence of system structure and not a result of outside, uncontrollable influences. In other words, a system that oscillates does so because it has an inherent tendency to do so.
