Analyzing a Stock and Flow Model to Understand the Body’s Ability to Process Alcohol

  Ms. Joyce's Anatomy and Physiology students at IACS in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, explore the effects of alcohol using a model and simulation developed at the Creative Learning Exchange, Thinking about Drinking. The students analyzed the model and then used it in a cumulative assessment to illustrate connections between the respiratory, circulatory, and digestive systems. The paper includes modifications of the handouts found on the CLE website as well as a rubric and other materials for teachers to use this simulation successfully in their classes. The curricular surround starts with students describing their understanding of a breathalyser and Blood Alcohol Content from their previous knowledge and finishes with a final poster to communicate students' learning.

A Structure for Assessing Systems Thinking

  Proponents of systems thinking have a parallel set of challenges. While some may dream of a society proficient in computer modeling of complex systems, educators would be wise to identify more modest goals as well. For some students, these modest goals may be the extent of their systems thinking, while for future innovators and leaders they will be stepping stones to more sophisticated study of complexity. In either case, systems-oriented curriculum will stagnate until these intermediate goals are identified and explained. In this article we suggest a structure for assessing and documenting students’ progress through these intermediate goals.

12-Day Training Materials

Representing 6 years of development by the CC-STADUS/CC-SUSTAIN Project, these materials are based on the 12-day training that the NSF funded project has provided for teacher workshops each summer. They allow experienced modelers to conduct a similar program without the need to develop their own materials. The materials can be use exactly as they stand.
