For introducing systems, my favorite book to give to students is the "Macroscope" by J de Rosnay. It is out of print, but full text is available at the Principia Cybernetica Web http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/macrbook.html . That web site is a veritable treasure trove of stuff.
