Exactly, this is the best reason to look at DYNAMO. Model conversion is a great learning process.
As you said, not something to do forever (unless you find that gem of a model that addresses your problem).

I highly recommend three things one should get in order to do this:
The System Dynamics Society's MIT SD Group Literature Collection - a wealth of DYNAMO models Introduction to System Dynamics with DYNAMO - Pugh and Richardson Dynamo User's Manual - Pugh

The latter two can be found via the internet (try used.adall.com), the Literature Collection is at www.systemdynamics.org
