Rock and Tang (2009, "Neuroscience of Engagement", NeuroLeadership Journal, Sydney) suggest that the neural foundation for engagement is tied to reward/threat perceptions, and the corresponding approach/avoid response. The level of engagment/disengagement depends on the degree to which we respond to stimuli with the amygdala versus the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Studies have shown (sorry, don't have the citation at hand) that the brain does not distinguish much between physical pain and social pain. Seems to me this is relevant to the discussion on what influences children to be engaged in the classroom.
The above is in part why I expressed doubts about Zachary's CLD.
