Maybe the underlying problem is the irrelevancy to the students of schooling as it currently exists. The discussion you are talking about, Richard, seems to me, is based on the assumption that what school is doing is fine, it is the kids that are the problem. Sometimes it is very hard for those immersed in a system ( educators) to step outside it. How about adding some students who are having problems to the mix of those discussing this? Nothing like hearing it from the people affected.
I think you are asking the right question when you ask, are these the symptoms of a more basic problem? They are lucky to have you there and asking, Richard.
