Don't overlook the role of the world outside the school. Ultimately, schools are an integrative mechanism, the purpose of which is to assist people in maximizing their own potential in ways that mesh with the evolving needs of the world around them. Can schools succeed when they fail to evolve with their world? In some ways, schools are closed systems; they certainly act like this at times. But ultimately, external factors are not really external, such as students' lives, the economic and technological realities in which we live, mutual interrelationship among schools and their communities. Can students' education be relevant when boundaries are enforced?
