I would point to momentum balanced with focus as a factor in increasing achievement. As one experiences success, one pushes forward even more, and may even expand that momentum into other areas. This is the classic argument for high school extra-curricular activities; that the discipline and success of sports creates a situation in which the student can succeed in many areas of school. Focus balances this instinct to go "all out" by picking the most important goals and intensifying energy expenditures on them.
