Fourth grade is new to me this year. I feel as though I'm continually treading water as I try to master the mounds of paperwork, new schedules, new content.... on and on and on. And as usual, I've been assigned a class filled with "firecrackers" and "leisure learners".
A few days ago, the principal of our school gave us the directive to choose a "Golden Rule" student. I struggled for about ten minutes trying to explain, then instinctively drew a "bathtub" on the overhead and turned it into a stock flow. After I put only one or two examples on the board, all my fourth graders instinctively understood and began to "design" it for me. At some point, one of them commented, "So we're really just talking about Respect, aren't we?"
In less than an hour, they built a comprehensible model of Respect.
