I've been thinking about delays a lot lately . . . a thin understanding to be sure . . . and something we moderns wish to sweep away; Don't Delay! Immediately Available! Download War and Peace in 60 seconds! Instantaneous Feedback! Credit Approval in five minutes! Guaranteed in-stock! Overnight Delivery! The list goes on.

As I walk around our school and consider my students in my classroom, I ponder the various delays that impact our daily lives: student-athlete eligibility, corrected papers returned to students, comprehending beauty, permission slips distributed and returned, book orders, longing to see a girl friend, establishing trust in a classroom or among colleagues. You get the idea. It's not all academic, but it all impinges on the academic life of a child and a teacher.
