They are out of touch with the real world because they are not allowed to *be* in the real world. And being in that world certainly doesn't mean restricting such things as television or the vast resources now available electronically. Provide a rich and nurturing environment and suddenly "teaching" becomes far less of a concern.
I think your last remark is the most critical: the student in traditional education systems has little time left to explore. How unfortunate that in our clumsy gallop to make our children know more we have stripped them of the time to learn anything.
