Richard, Thank you so much for all these rich pointers, I'm looking forward to a weekend of delightful reading.
IMO when the items you're searching for patterns are more alike than different, like atoms, molecules, compounds etc. statistics can have value. But when the items you're searching for patterns are more different than alike such as Individual people it's useless.
Perhaps that's why psychology & education have not made the same strides as almost every other branch of human inquiry.
