Standards in Math

Dear All,
At the risk of swooping in with the message to the choir- the disengagement by the time kids are teens, the focus on the test and just getting through is what we are creating by our current schooling system. And yes, learner-centered learning with significant SD content can help. So HOW do we get others to listen? We have had 20 years of success in the classroom. We know SD/ST helps kids learn, engages them, teaches them critical thinking skills. The educational "establishment" doesn't know that. Most teachers don't know that and maybe more importantly the public, both the literate public and the media/public don't know that.
This discussion about mathematical concepts is a great jumping off place. Math literacy is critical and needed, and a current topic of conversation. System Dynamics can help math literacy. I actually had responded privately to George's post on the 10 mathematical concepts with the thought that we should look at the NCTM standards ( thank you, Richard for the url for all of us) and use those, with George's standards modified by input from others to construct a case, a serious academic case, for the use of SD to improve Math literacy (along with many other things we won't even mention.)
Does anyone want to help me with this? Please respond to me privately and after we get started we will keep the list informed.
Take care, Lees
