Read George's list. Read through Rob's math problems. Listened to Conrad Wolfram on TED. Heard the bleak news about recent international math tests taken by students from 34 countries. Not much to be proud of there. Listened to my math teachers talk about students who don't work, students who don't seem to care about equations and logic (like you, I am utterly shocked and appalled). Are we going to have our young people do so much math homework that, in a few generations, no one will be able to do math anymore?
Mathematics is a way of seeing and of narrating. Take a read of my recent OneThing12 at http://itsallonething.com/. System Dynamics to the rescue!
If I can read A. A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh to a four year old, then why can't we ask four year olds to work with mathematical models?
