It's About the Model
Posted by Tim Joy on 12/22/2010
What's in folks' heads that guides them to do what they do?
When George Richardson tells us that SD is about "modeling" and NOT about "programming," he's talking about what's in folks' heads. And what's in there is the focus of tonight's WORD . . . abstraction
. . . ah, no, sorry, just thinking about Colbert Report.
When we educate, we hone mental models. That probably won't go over big at a School Board Meeting, but it's what we're up to, isn't it? And so I've been thinking about Alfred Korzybski, famed spouter of "the map is not the territory" and progenitor of General Semantics. Abstractions notwithstanding, I wrote a thing about models and knowing and how we ought to teach. A start anyway. If you're curious, you'll find it at http://itsallonething.com/
