I have found that providing a context to the learning engages the students in the learning. There are basics that are necessary, but by introducing students to the bigger picture makes the learning of the vocabulary, etc. more meaningful. Secondly, parental involvement is crucial. Without an integrated, even in a limited sense, approach it is difficult to rally the parents. In other words, career paths, etc. do make a difference...it brings in students, parents, teachers and community. One of our beliefs at Norwalk High School is "learning drives teaching." The Schlechty Center has been providing us support as we work on transforming our school into a learning organization. The belief I mentioned is very difficult to understand...as more of us come to understand what it means, the lesson design is modified...there is a constant feedback loop involved...I just realized that. This is difficult for some teachers because it requires knowledge of the students and flexibility on the part of the teacher. Della Robertson
