Your point is the precise point of Phil Schlechty's "Working on the Work" and Lesson Design. The lesson is designed based upon knowledge of the "Who"....the teacher assesses the level of student engagement...after reflection, the lesson may be modified. There is a distinction between lesson design and lesson planning. The overarching goal of "Working on the Work" is to transform schools into learning communities. Google "Phillip Schlechty" to find some excellent books he has written and to find out about the work he has been doing in school districts in California, Texas, Louisiana....
