I had a similar experience many years ago when a student came into my office and asked, "What is management." I had no good answer and asked him to wait while in went down the hall asking the same question of other faculty members in the management school. The only tangible reply that I received was to read Alfred Sloan's "My years with General Motors."

What is engineering? What is medicine? What is system dynamics?
They all defy a brief answer.
