BE: To bring this back to the classroom, it was Paulo Friere who reminded us that authoritarian, hierarchal, competetive schools perpetuated an Authoritarian, hierarchal, competetive society. It is not what we teach from which students learn it is how we teach. If we want a cooperative society we should have a cooperative learning method. If we want students to think on their own we have to free them from curricula, textbooks, and teachers and give them the freedom, the right, the resources, and the opportunity to learn what they want, when they want, and how they want.
This suggests that the K-12 Discussion should read Ivan Illich's "Deschooling Society," Holt's "Learning All of the Time," and Gatto's "Dumbing us Down" and think our-of-the-box for new options for learning.
