Science Teacher Comments
Posted by Richard Turnock on 3/11/2009
Last night, talked to my son-in-law, a middle school science teacher for TAG program in Oregon Public School.
We talked about the new Oregon standards for science. He said the district science teachers had an all day session last week talking about planning for the changes. He said the key change was adding the “Engineering Design” standards.
He suggested that the current “mile-wide and inch-deep” was going to get worse because K12 teachers aren’t going to quickly change what they are doing with science, while also adding “engineering design”.
Oh, by the way, the “Engineering Design” standards are for K-12. Having elementary teachers learn to implement “Engineering Design” standards is going to be really difficult.
I’m thinking this is an opportunity to design simulations for an electric go-kart or bottle rocket for elementary teachers to use.
