All,
At the risk of sounding like a Luddite, allow me to point out a strange dynamic. It appears to me there is a large difference in the following of this list and the SD forum. They speak of very different things with very different passions. The SD K-12 list has, over the two years or so that I've been a member, consistently engaged in what I feel are more relevant and productive discussions, especially now that the SD list has transitioned to a forum. Things are so quiet there you can hear pins dropping.
My expectations were the new SD forum would improve things. It has not. The SD community, for example, still does not discuss articles as they appear in the SD Review. One would think this would be one of the hottest topics of them all. It is in other fields with a journal. But it's not in SD. There is some strange dysfunctional behavior underway that I can't explain. I don't see this problem in the SD K-12 list.
After long comparison, I find a light traffic email list fits into my normal workflow _much_ better than taking the time to go to a forum with such light traffic. If the forum had heavy traffic, it would be more efficient that an email list.
We may be finding ourselves in the middle of some counter-intuitive behavior here. What seems to be an improvement, a suggestion to merge with the SD forum, may in reality be a step backward.
Just a few thoughts,
Jack Harich
