Actually, we should probably look at the science/science policy community. They have studied the competition vs. sharing concept in advancing technology or science --> basically innovation. I do not have any references at my fingertips but I can look them up as this was a topic of discussion within the Science of Science Policy community listserv oh maybe two months ago.
