Analyzing a Stock and Flow Model to Understand the Body’s Ability to Process Alcohol
Author(s): Ashley Joyce Subject: Cross-Curricular
Ms. Joyce's Anatomy and Physiology students at IACS in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, explore the effects of alcohol using a model and simulation developed at the Creative Learning Exchange, Thinking about Drinking. The students analyzed the model and then used it in a cumulative assessment to illustrate connections between the respiratory, circulatory, and digestive systems. The paper includes modifications of the handouts found on the CLE website as well as a rubric and other materials for teachers to use this simulation successfully in their classes. The curricular surround starts with students describing their understanding of a breathalyser and Blood Alcohol Content from their previous knowledge and finishes with a final poster to communicate students' learning.

Systems Tools in High School: Interdisciplinary Learning in a Science Classroom
Author(s): Alan Ticotsky Subject: Implementation
A summary of how one teacher teaches across the curriculum. Chris DiCarlo teaches high school classes in several different disciplines at Innovation Academy Charter School (IACS). While technically in the science and math departments, he has taught physics, pre-calculus, robotics, environmental systems, financial literacy... and that's just in the past two years! The threads that tie together all of Chris's classes are a tightly woven combination of his own dynamic teaching style and the learning environment at IACS. Chris worked with IACS high school principal, Greg Orpen, to design a one-semester elective systems course for Fall 2012. "Environmental Systems and Computer Modeling" was designed to provide students with an overview of the Earth's physical systems and how human activity affects those systems.

Using Systems Tools In Music Class
Author(s): Andrew Frankhouse, & with Alan Ticotsky Subject: Cross-Curricular
At Innovation Academy Charter School (IACS) in Tyngsborough, MA, music teacher Andrew Frankhouse uses systems tools in creative and perhaps unexpected ways. Behavior-over-time graphs (BOTGs) help students analyze and appreciate different pieces of music, and visualize graphically how aspects of compositions develop. Andrew also uses feedback loops to help students understand the business of music.
