Bill, that is a very interesting lesson plan. I would like to see a video of it in action one day....

Here's another variation. Four, appoint three people to remain stationary, forming a triangle; tell the remaining people in the group that they have to choose one of them. Five, have the remaining students choose two of them.

The last variation is an instance of geometrical frustration, which you could tie to family systems theory.
