I am a math and science tutor at a local high school. My students come to my house for tutoring. I do one on one tutoring at $10/hr, use to be free, but that was abused by parents and kids. "Don't figure" lol
Any how my point is that repetition and parental support is essential. I have one student who is really suffering in high school because he can not do basic arithmetic, like the times table, percentages etc. Try tutoring a student taking Geometry that lacks basic math skills. I still do not understand how this kid got through Algebra 1. If his dad did not bring him to my house, I would never see this 10th grader again! I try to facilitate the process of learning. He likes to shot guns so I taught him how to do reloading applying basic math. Kids do not know how to learn a new subject. The biggest problem is that they refuse to read and study the book, they want to be entertained. Gee, wonder where that comes from? lol The smarter kids just depend on class notes and the teachers hints about what to study so they can get a good grade on the test. Of course, we would not want them to learn something beyond what is on the test.
There is no easy solution, we have to deal with each child. I am blessed, I work only one on one with students. I can do that because I am retired. I use to sub for awhile, could not take it. Teachers are my heroes, I do not know how you guys keep your sanity.
Alex
