Years ago when I taught my five year old daughter how to ride a bicycle I remember experiencing the following:
1. Who is teaching whom? I suddenly realized that I had no clue what I was doing, even though I had many years of experience riding a bike and many scars on my head too.
2. You have to know when to hold on, but more importantly you have to know when to let go. Too much holding on or letting go is not good for either the teacher (gets a sore back) or the student (falls and gets hurt, cries, fears losing control of the bike, etc.).
3. When I “taught” my son at the age of 3, he simply directed me to take off the training wheels. I thought to myself, OK, this kid wants to learn the hard way. But away he went down the street. So my original strategy developed with my daughter was not used. But it was extremely worrisome and hard for me to watch.
