Dear All:
At its most elemental level, SD is about understanding causes and consequences of change. In other words, it's about understanding the nature of the world around us, exactly what children are up to from their earliest inklings onward. Unless there is some elementary instruction on stocks and flows, any systems education will be built on a shifting foundation.
Any child who sits in a bathtub, watches leaves fall from a tree, steals pens from a classmate, goes to the bathroom, gets frustrated, goes to sleep because she is worn out, wants to know why her friend grows angry, or watches rain fill a puddle, any such child can master fundamental relationships of stocks and flows.
Combine this with behavior over time graphs and occasional causal loop diagrams, and certainly a child in K-3 will emerge with a different field perception of the world.
