Another humble opinion and suggestion -

perhaps root causes are pointed to in the value systems of a society and the power of their (the systems') adherents.

Whether or not one considers the various political parties to be variations on a single, national theme, or different parties with similar differences and different similarities could be an interesting topic for exploration, and one illustration of the point I'm making.
