A Systems View of Growing and Developing for Young Children
Author(s): Greg Reid Subject: Science
From Catalina Foothills School District. Through the use of BOTGs, students will understand that body size and skill mastery is usually dependent upon age. In addition, they will discuss practices that will help develop their physical and learning skills.

Complex Systems Connection: Separate Cause and Effect, Short and Long Term Conflicts. Using BOTGs showing age and abilities, students can gain an understanding of how actions in the present affect results in the future and how we might need to do more of what we don't want to do now (spending time studying instead of playing, for example) in order to reap the benefits in the future.

Causes of the Civil War
Author(s): Greg Reid Subject: Social Studies
From Catalina Foothills School District. Five one hour lessons for 5th grade students. Through viewing relationships and systems, the learners will be able to graphically describe the tension in the US and the various causes of the Civil War. Students wil

Comments on Future of K-12 Education (D-4900-1)
Author(s): Jay Forrester Subject: System Dynamics
There is a fundamentally different kind of pre-college education that the author, along with many others, has been pioneering for more than twenty years. The demonstration phase is now completed and it is time to launch a major implementation program to expand into a growing number of schools. This is a long-range and difficult undertaking but necessary if K-12 schools are to produce citizens who are prepared for the challenges of the future.

Deceleration of the Earth
Author(s): Leisa Hall, Kristy Stotler, & Sunmi Yi Subject: Student Work
A 1999 SyMBowl finalist paper. This paper discusses a model developed to demonstrate how the gravitational pull of the moon affects the deceleration of the earth.

Complex Systems Connection: Separate Cause and Effect. The earth is decelerating, but why? This example

Effective Use of Simulations in the Classroom
Author(s): (Martha) Jane Dunkel Chilcott Subject: Implementation
From Catalina Foothills School District. This paper provides information that will help teachers understand what a simulation is as well as when and why to use one. Both system dynamics simulations and role-playing simulations are explained and related to each other. Detailed information is provided to help teachers implement simulations in the classroom.

Epidemics Game Packet
Author(s): Will Glass Subject: Cross-Curricular
From Catalina Foothills School District. This packet includes a description of a simple game to be played in a classroom or with other groups of people as well as follow up exercises. Includes: a) Teaching System Dynamics: Looking at Epidemics (William Glass). Material for teaching system dynamics concepts through a game based on the spread of an epidemic. It includes models, exercises for students, and teacher guidelines. Requires a Macintosh computer and STELLA software if the entire packet is used. b) The Epidemic Game -- Observations (William Glass). A supplemental description of using the Epidemics game in the classroom.

Complex Systems Connection: Separate Cause and Effect. For some illness/disease, symptoms appear long after initial infection. Sometimes people travel great distance while infected because they are unaware of the infection. Medical "detectives" faced with an epidemic must understand how the infection spreads and how quickly. Delays in the system make this more difficult.

From Hunter-Gatherers to Farmers: Students Study How Civilization Changed during the Neolithic Age
Author(s): Jason O'Neil-Willoughby, Martha McClure, & with Alan Ticotsky Subject: Social Studies
Human civilization underwent significant changes between the periods archaeologists characterize as the Paleolithic Age and the Neolithic Age. Why and how did people become less nomadic? What factors led to technological growth and the development of more

GET MOVING! Solutions to the Epidemic of Childhood Obesity
Author(s): Omar Aboulezz, & Debra Lyneis Subject: Student Work
What happens when kids spend hours every day watching TV or playing video games? Could these behaviors lead to obesity and serious illness? And, if so, what can we do about it? Omar Aboulezz, a fifth grader at the Flagg Street School in Worcester, Massa

History and Biology of Smallpox: A General Introduction to the Epidemic Spread of Disease
Author(s): John Heinbokel, & Jeff Potash Subject: Cross-Curricular
This series of case-studies developed by the Waters Center for System Dynamics examines the dynamics and impacts of such epidemics primarily through the lens of one specific disease --smallpox.

How Does a Galaxy Evolve?
Author(s): Carl Anderson, & Steven Cottingham Subject: Student Work
A 1999 SyMBowl finalist paper. This paper discusses a model developed to demonstrate what happens in a galaxy as it goes into stars and eventually into white dwarfs, black holes, and neutron stars.

Complex Systems Connection: Separate Cause and Effect. A model of how
