The documentary "Race to Nowhere" provides an interesting, and heartbreaking, view of the consequences of current narrative on school reform on teachers, children, and families. I saw it at the local university shortly after "Waiting for Superman" premiered in Cincinnati. Guess which film had the news cameras outside waiting for the mayor to exit the film?
The questions I took away from the documentary are: what reform? Whose reform? To what end? Who decided? Who decided who decided? Why on earth (or Krypton) are we, as a society, putting up with this?
Any model of the capacity of schools to implement change in this kryptonite-infused climate needs to factor in the mental breakdowns, suicides, stress on students and families, as well as stress on teacher's families and faculty burnout.
